The Wild Bunch
Unsurpassed Fun and Adventure

Sunday the 6th of July.
Another beautiful morning in Ouray. We met once again at the pool around
9:00. Today we had Leila and myself, the Lanes, the Cox's, the Putnams, the
Chase's and Pattons and Terry Hubbard and his friends Travis and Bradley. Chris had gone and rented a Jeep for the day. Wasn't going to miss out
again.
We started out for Imogene but before we got too far, Travis' rig had some
overheating issues that forced him and Terry to turn back.
So off we went up the hill. Not too many others on the road today. There
were a lot of ATV trailers parked at the start of Yankee Boy Road. But we
didn't encounter but a couple on our journey.
The creek crossing on to Imogene Trail was pretty deep with all the snow
melt but we all got across it safely. As we approached the big falls that
has the crossing option obstacle, we decided the water was too swift and
decided to forego the thrill for safety's sake. We stopped a few times to
stretch our legs and enjoy the awesome scenery that was before us. Close to
the top of the pass we had our annual obligatory snowball fight. Poor Chris
was caught in a crossfire and couldn't get out of his Jeep because he was
stopped in a huge water puddle. Was it a planned ambush of the Chase's?
Only the shadow knows. By the time we reached the summit, the weather
turned chilly to say the least. But then again, when have we ever been to
the top of Imogene when it wasn't windy and cold. Still, it was a great view
of the surrounding area. The clouds came in and a few sprinkles started
tapping the tops of our Jeeps. After a family photo on the top, we headed
down through the Tomboy mining area. Over the years the snows and harsh
winters have not been too kind to the old buildings. Especially this winter.
A few more structures have fallen by the wayside, but it is still one of the
more remarkable ghost towns you will find.
On our way down we met quite a few folks coming up, but with a bit of
careful backing and manipulation of rigs, we all passed with no trouble.
We got to Telluride around 3:00, said goodbye to the Chase's and Pattons, as
they had to get back to Ouray by 5:00 to turn in their Jeeps. The rest of us
enjoyed and great meal at the Smuggler
restaurant. Afterward, we aired up
and headed for home, reflecting on another great day of 4-wheeling in our
beautiful backyard that is the San Juans.
GOOD TIMES!!
